My Dog growls when we walk near his food, is that normal?

When we put down my dogs food, he runs over and immediately starts guarding. If we walk close or say go eating your food he growls and not like a playful growl, like a really fiesty grawl and eventually will lead to him snapping. He is a small pekingnesse and very protective, but he thinks we will steal his food. He can lay there for hours just sitting there watching it… Now he is starting to eat fast so he doesnt have to guard– but hes eating so fast that hours later hes throwing it back up. What can you do to make a dog stop guarding…

That is a dominance behaviour and must be curbed.

From now on, make him sit before he gets his food. Continue to hold the bowl in your hand while he eats. If he growls, yank the bowl away and make him sit again. Once he’s sitting, bring the food back and say “Okay!” to let him know he can eat again. Rinse repeat until you can take the bowl away at random during the time he’s *not* growling, and all he does is sit and wait. Then again return the bowl to the ground, and every now and then, take it away for a few seconds. This teaches him that not only are you the source and controller of food as the dominant member of the household, but that *the food comes back*.

Now, this is not going to fix instantly. Be prepared to spend a couple weeks or a couple months doing this.

Your little dog needs some serious work. You need to also show your dominance at other times. Make him sit-stay before you let him out the door for going to the bathroom or walk. YOU need to be the first one through a door. YOU eat first (in fact, pretend to eat from his bowl before giving it to him). Do NOT give your dog any attention if he begs for it by jumping on you, pawing you, or anything like that. All you’re doing if you pet him then is reinforcing the fact that he’s dominant and can make you do what he wants when he wants it.
