Royal Canin Dog Food Samples

What is the HEALTHIEST brand of food that I can buy at PetSmart?

We took my animals to the vet this morning, and my dog is 5 pounds overweight and he has a bit of arthritis. The vet suggested switching brands slowly. What brand is the healthiest for him? Is there any food that will help his arthritis? Also, I want to switch my cats brand of food slowly also. The vet gave us a Royal Canin sample bag. Is that brand of food good? I would really not like to order it off the internet, just buy it from PetSmart or something :)
My dog is on Ol Roy
My cat is on Iams
I know they are bad brands that is why we are switching.
I don’t want any brand that has By Products and tons of fillers

Hi Animals r Awesome!

Hope your birthday was fun!

I am sorry that I cannot comment on dog food, but the links below where I listed brands that are available in some pet stores, more than likely carry higher quality dog food.

Here is an excellent article on canine Arthritis, however that discusses holistic treatment options.

And now onto cat foods: Glad you will be changing the diets over slowly. That really helps to prevent digestive problems.

There is one variety of Fancy Feast ( a turkey flavor) that has no grain. You will need to read the labels of their turkey variety to find it. You can get it at any supermarket, actually. Royal Canin is not one of my favorites, but then again, dry food is not on the hit parade at my house.

Most of the really good grain free products are not available at PetSmart or any Pet chain store. Since cats don’t need grain, and, in fact, grain can cause digestive disturbances, we don’t feed any food that contains grain, at all.

It is a shame that PetSmart doesn’t carry a really excellent variety of cat food, such as Wellness, but the grain free Fancy Feast is not that bad.

For a review of commercial catfoods take a look at this article: It is a must read, in my opinion:

These three brands below, are available at some pet stores. You can check it doing a search with your zip code and state to see where the nearest stores are located. These are the grain free variety:

Who knows, there may be a store close enough for you to find the more desirable brands.

Hope this helps.
